Expanding Sewage Treatment Capacity for a Remote Mining Village in Tasmania
Kelair's customer, a mining company based in a remote village on the west coast of Tasmania, was faced with the challenge of increasing its sewage treatment capacity. The village, situated near an expanding open-pit mine, had been relying on multiple Kelair-Blivet™ packaged sewage treatment plants, ranging from BL500 to BL3500 models, strategically positioned between the village and the mine pit. As the mine expanded and the population grew, the existing Blivet plant was no longer able to handle the additional sewage load.
The primary issue was the need to upsize the treatment capacity without disrupting the village's infrastructure. The existing Blivet plant, designed for smaller populations, could not keep up with the increased demand caused by the village expansion. The mining company needed a solution that was scalable, low-maintenance, and could be relocated with ease as the village continued to grow and evolve.

Kelair recommended upgrading to a BL3500 Blivet, a compact and flexible plant capable of treating up to 17.87kg of BOD (biological oxygen demand) per day, making it suitable for the increased population. The Blivet is designed to be highly efficient and simple to maintain, containing only two electrical devices. The compact design also allows it to be easily removed and relocated, which made it an ideal solution for the mining company’s evolving site requirements.
The old Blivet unit, which had become too small for the village, was not discarded. Instead, thanks to the Blivet’s portability, it was relocated to the processing plant to replace an outdated system, optimizing resources and ensuring minimal waste.

Other treatment plants were considered for the expanded application, but none matched the Kelair-Blivet in terms of standard features and proven reliability. The customer, already familiar with the performance of their existing Blivets, appreciated the low maintenance requirements and trusted the system to provide years of trouble-free treatment. This familiarity, combined with the flexibility and efficiency of the Blivet, made it the clear choice for the expanded sewage treatment needs of the mining village.
Key Features of the Kelair-Blivet™
- Capacity: Capable of treating sewage from 30 to 400 people, with sizes suitable for diverse applications such as high-rise buildings, golf courses, and remote sites like mining and power stations.
- Design: The Blivet™ is a stand-alone solution that includes primary settlement, aerobic treatment, final settlement, and sludge storage, producing high-quality effluent without the need for additional tanks or equipment.
- Low Maintenance: With only periodic desludging and bearing inspections required, maintenance demands are minimal. Shaft breakage is also eliminated due to the buoyancy of the rotors, ensuring long-term reliability.
- Flexibility: The unit can be buried up to deck level to minimize landscape intrusion or positioned above ground, typically surrounded by a walkway for ease of access.
